Does Using Notes or Lists Reduce Cognitive Capacity?

I was having a discussion a friend, and the topic of taking notes or leaving paper reminders came up. I am personally a fan of this, and not to a ridiculous degree. I just like to use the occasional note for things that are slightly outside of the ordinary.

My friend supposed that using notes or calendars or anything of that nature diminishes your cognitive capabilities and basically ruins your brain. She was dead-set on this.

I think the opposite is true. Using notes or reminders frees me from having to think about such things so I can focus on the bigger picture. This was actually a pretty large part of the “GETTING THINGS DONE” book by David Allen. I am not harnessing the power of notes to be free of thinking entirely. In fact, I am opening myself up to exist in a higher state of cognition, so to me, it feels like this should be advancing my brain power… And who doesn’t want that?

I wanted a third party to intervene. Even though this is technically a third opinion, I believe we are all familiar with the concept of seeking a second opinion as a matter of common English methodology to gain confidence in either one of the initial options.
